Jett’s Wild Flight: The Biggest Little City in the World

By: Jett Lillie, 4/13/23

We awoke and washed Daddy’s truck. Then after we went to Boomtown Casino because it had a Fun Center for kids. We played a mini golf course, arcade games, and rode the carousel for free!

We then drove to Circus Circus casino and played lots of claw machines and carnival machines at their Midway.

We started at the Visitor Center and watched the park movie. After we explored the Visitor Center we went to the Café.

In the Café Jett and I worked on and our Jr Ranger booklets while sipping on hot chocolate. Once we finished, we got our badges and celebrated that it was our 100th!

Then we went on a Nature Walk at the base of Wheeler Peak. There wasn’t much we could get to because it was still very snowy. We found some picnic tables and ate our picnic lunch.

After lunch, we went on a 90-minute Ranger led tour through the Cave! It had a lot of water from all the snowmelt. Even the Park Ranger said she had never seen it like this in the 3 years she’s worked here.

This cave had many formations including cave shields… something I’ve never seen before.

Here is the video I made on our YouTube channel to get a closer look:

Sadly, we didn’t see any bats because they are still in hibernation. But these bats are very healthy! This cave has not been infected by White Nose Syndrome. White Nose Syndrome is a disease that is killing bats all over the country…some species are close to extinction because of it! So it is very encouraging that this cave is healthy. And to prevent carrying White Nose Syndrome on us, we had to wear shoes that we hadn’t worn before in any other cave. Daddy didn’t have any new shoes like the rest of us did, so he had to soak his shoes for 5 minutes in this tub full of solution. He had to walk around in his socks for a while… hee hee!

We had lots of fun at Great Basin National Park – especially exploring Lehmans Caves!
